Vanilla Is Not Vanilla !!!
April 20, 2024
Vanilla is a go-to term for something that is very ordinary, basic or default option across food, software, sales, finance or maybe across all domains. Vanilla is considered to be the defacto standard without any bells and whistles.
But Vanilla is anything but “vanilla.” This humble bean is the fruit of an exotic orchid native to Mexico. Yes, it is an orchid and not a typical garden plant. Vanilla bean’s enchanting aroma and flavour come from a compound called vanillin. A vanilla flower blooms for just one morning in an entire year. If it isn’t pollinated by a specific Mexican bee on that very morning, it wilts away, leaving no bean behind. The labour-intensive process of Vanilla production makes it the second most expensive spice in the entire world, trailing only behind saffron.
In spite of these challenges, vanilla is universally adored and is found in every corner of the world. From cakes to perfumes, vanilla’s comforting presence is felt and loved. Its timeless appeal transcends cultures, making it a global favourite.
So the next time someone calls something “so vanilla,” maybe take it as a compliment. After all, if vanilla, with its rich history and complex production, is the standard, then that’s a pretty high bar to meet.
As product leaders, we must ask ourselves: Is our default as mind-blowing as vanilla? Time to up our game, perhaps !!!
