Silver Oak Health
How We Built India's Largest Mental Health Platform
July 21, 2022
Most mental health startups fail because they solve the wrong problem.
They build beautiful apps for individuals when the real problem is systemic - companies have no clue how to handle workplace mental health. We built Silver Oak Health by ignoring every piece of advice about the mental health space.
What Everyone Gets Wrong About Corporate Mental Health
The standard playbook says: Build a consumer app, get users, then sell to companies. We did the opposite.
While competitors were chasing individual downloads, we went straight to the source - the 500+ companies who actually pay the bills. Turns out, employees don't download mental health apps. But HR departments desperately need solutions that actually work.
The contrarian bet: Companies will pay premium prices for solutions that solve their compliance and employee wellness headaches, not another meditation app.
How We Actually Built This
Digital-First When Everyone Said "Personal Touch"
90% appointments booked digitally
70% interactions happen online
90% therapy sessions are virtual
Everyone told us Indian employees want face-to-face counseling. Wrong. They want privacy, convenience, and anonymity. Our digital model gives them all three.
Enterprise Sales When Everyone Said "Consumer First"
We skipped the consumer validation phase entirely. Instead of building for individuals hoping companies would follow, we built for companies from day one.
Result: 35 lakh+ employees across Reliance, Samsung, Mercedes, Flipkart, TATA Group trust our platform. No consumer acquisition costs, no conversion funnels, just enterprise contracts that actually scale.
Team Size That Makes Sense
Currently, Silver Oak Health has 200+ full-time employees serving 35 lakh+ users. g problems.
What I Actually Do at SilverOakHealth
As Co-Founder & CTO, I built the entire technology stack that makes this scale possible. Leading a 25-person tech team, we've created:
Award-winning EAP platform that works in the messy reality of Indian workplaces
Analytics that actually help companies understand their employee wellness
Security infrastructure that meets enterprise compliance requirements
The real job: Turning complex enterprise mental health problems into simple, scalable technology. Not building features, but replacing entire budget lines for companies.
What We Learned Building This
Mental health isn't a technology problem - it's a distribution and trust problem. We solved distribution through enterprise partnerships and trust through clinical validation.
B2B mental health requires different metrics than consumer apps. We measure employee engagement, company retention, and clinical outcomes - not downloads or session time.
Enterprise customers want solutions, not features. They'll pay premium for platforms that solve compliance, reduce HR workload, and actually improve employee wellbeing.
The Framework That Worked
Solve the payer's problem first - Companies need compliance and measurable wellness outcomes
Build for privacy by default - Employees won't engage without anonymity
Make it digital-native - Virtual care scales better than physical infrastructure
Focus on enterprise workflows - Integrate with existing HR systems, not consumer habits
